Kayaking

Kayak Clothing

If you are a water sport enthusiast but are new to kayaking then you certainly, have a lot to learn. Kayaking poses real challenges but also offers some spectacular moments, which cannot be described through mere words. One of the important aspects of this water sport is the requirement of the right kind of clothing. In fact, clothing can make a lot of difference depending on where you are kayaking. If you are kayaking in the icy cold waters of the Norwegian Fjords then you need to keep your body warm and protect it from Hypothermia. There are different kinds of suits that you need to know about. Here are some of them:

The Dry Suit: Wearing the dry suit will keep you dry and warm. The dry suit is a waterproof garment that has a tight fitting neck, wrist and ankle gaskets, which are made from stretchable rubber. There will be multiple waterproof zippers so that the entry of water through the suit can be reduced. Some of the dry suits come with hoods and socks.

The dry suit is meant to offer the highest level of thermal protection. A dry suit works on a principle with the help of which it traps a pocket of air that has been warmed by your body inside the suit. A dry suit cannot keep you warm by itself but it does not let the warmth of your body escape out either. It has a layer of insulation material like polyester fleece, which is worn under the dry suit. This polyester layer remains dry and warm thereby keeping you dry and comfortable even if your inflatable kayak capsizes or over turns. The suit does not allow your perspiration to escape, so it is important that the fabric be of good quality.

Some of the dry suits are available as two-piece outfits but most trainers would recommend a one-piece suit to reduce possible leaking. Here is a word of warning though: it is important to maintain your dry suit to keep it in top shape. Any small tear to the suit will make it useless. It is also advised not to paddle with your dry suit partially open because it will keep you afloat long enough to remount you on the kayak.

Dry suits work best when you are kayaking in some of the coldest regions in the world, where the temperature around you is sub zero. If your dry suit has an appropriate insulation layer, then it will protect you from cold water, splashing waves, cold wind, and rain.

The dry suit is one of the most important clothing that can save your life on any bad day. Therefore, if you are new to kayaking, you need to start your adventure with an expert trainer who can guide you with the basics of kayaking and also provide information regarding the type of clothes you need.
